This piece was painted over Easter weekend while I was thinking about my brother and his new baby girl. They have a cat named Poppi.
As I was painting, I added these soft pops of red, little “poppies” and toward the end, I placed one more on the left side, almost upside down. As soon as I painted it, I realized it was facing the other… like they were looking at each other. It felt like a reflection of how me and my brother have always been there for each other.
To me, this piece is about connection.
The lower poppy feels full, alive, rich with color, while the one above is more of an outline — open and undefined. Not empty, but open. Open to becoming, to possibility, to everything that hasn’t happened yet. Open to learning and being a curious novice to the world.
Connection between us and the people we love.
Connection between who we are now and who we are becoming.
